MAYHEM (N. Y. C.)
Mayhemic Destruction (1985)
|
Mayhem are the latest in deathcore thrash from New York. The band were formed by ex-Assault axeman Gordon Ancis who recruited bassist Tony Marc (also ex-Assault) and drummer and lead vocalist Tommy Carroll, formerly with Corrupt.
Despite a rather poor quality rehearsal tape, it’s obvious that Mayhem have more to offer than pure mindless thrash. The material, which is strictly hardcore (or ‘deathcore’, as the band describe it), is still developing, but the mixture of out-and-out thrash with controlled tempo changes shows plenty of imagination, with the instrumentation being above average. However, I can’t say I go a bundle on the blatant punk vocals.
Of the five numbers available I would say that ‘Deathwish’ and ‘Mayhemic Destruction’ are probably the best, but it’s all unbelievably intensive stuff and I’m certainly not gonna argue with Mayhem’s claim of being the fastest band around today!
By the way, Tony Marc, who appears on the demo, has recently been replaced by ex-Smegma bassist Craig Setari.
