Former MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP Vocalist David VanLanding Dies In Vehicle Collision

David VanLanding (real name: William David VanLandingham), former vocalist for German rock guitarist Michael Schenker and Sarasota, Florida-based progressive metal outfit Crimson Glory, died on November 17th, 2015 in a collision with a garbage truck in Clearwater, Florida.

Michael Schenker issued the following statement: “We are all lost for words at such a sudden tragic event taking David away from us. We last performed together in the USA, 2012, but had planned a special show together on the Axes & Anchors cruise in February 2016. He will be deeply missed. A great voice and a charming man. My condolences go out to his family and many friends.”

Todd La Torre, VanLanding’s friend and vocalist for Washington-based metal assortment Queensrÿche, shared the following words, meanwhile: “I am beyond devastated to learn that one of my best friends, David VanLanding, has passed away from a car accident. He was full of life, love, and laughter. He is notably known for singing with Michael Schenker, and has a lifelong professional music career, but those who knew him best know him as a loving friend, husband, and sibling. My deepest condolences to his wife and family.”

VanLanding initially started out in theatre, studying at the Columbia School Of Theatrical Arts in Maryland. He took part in several musicals, including the likes of Pippin, Peter Pan, and The Fantastiks, even acting alongside the actor Edward Norton for several shows.

In high school, VanLanding formed inaugural rock group Dark Star. Following his graduation from Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia, joining the Maryland-based ensemble Mannekin, remaining with them until their 1990 disbanding. Several months later, the singer joined Tony MacAlpine for the man’s Eyes Of The World Tour, taking time off afterwards and teaching voice for a while.

In 1993, VanLanding joined the ranks of Crimson Glory, embarking on a short tour with the band but leaving thereafter. Erotic Liquid Culture was formed, cutting a record which has yet to be released.

An audition for Michael Schenker occurred during the mid-90s, culminating in three intermittent tours; a US tour, a Japanese tour, and a G-3 tour of Europe. Another break took place, VanLanding returning to the music scene by participating in several cover bands like Dr. Ruth and Sylence, the former featuring Dwain Miller (Keel) and Greg Chaisson (Badlands).

An invitation to perform with Michael Schenker once more was accepted, VanLanding stepping behind the microphone for a 2011 tour of South America as well as a 2012 tour of North America.
