Fans of Lucifer, Ruby The Hatchet and maybe even Wolfmother might want to check out this debut full-length album from Austrian rockers Dusk.
Over the years I’ve heard and reviewed a host of similar bands to this, so in other words Dusk offer nothing knew and yet Wheels Of Twilight is an album I dig. From the off there is that vintage whiff about the record, be it the band’s fashion sense, the sublime female vocals or the general sound that flirts with that rock ‘n’ roll doom vibe. This is easy on the ears and goes down like a creamy liqueur as it offers an abundance of familiarity on its occult vibes and lighter drives.
Streaks of Heart and a yellowed 70s mellowness abound here as a series of flighty anthems tease us with shadowy aplomb. The opening title cut effortlessly slithers with a summery yet stoned groove, while ‘Wendigo’ ups the pace, revealing itself as a straight up rocker although its latter stages offer some killer brooding rolls of doom.
‘The Dagger’ stands out for its stripped back roughage; a simple yet New Wave Of British Heavy Metal aesthetic caressed by the soaring vocals. For me though the whole album pivots on the excellent ‘Shapeshifter / Driving My Love Away’, a decent groover not far removed from the black twists of Lucifer, where again the guitar tone is key.
Dusk offers up nothing new, but this is an opus dripping with well driven dynamics. I guess my only real quibble is the fact it’s dressed up like some doomy slice of occult rock when it isn’t, but you will hear streaks of the 70s dark rock scene and that strong air of familiarity with the bluesy shades. Think then of Budgie, Blues Pills and Lucifer.
