MORBUS GRAVE
Feasting The Macabre

Memento Mori (2024)
Rating: 8/10

It took over a decade for this Italian death metal act to release their debut album Lurking Into Absurdity in 2022. I was concerned that a follow up might not emerge for another decade too, but here we are, just two years later, with Feasting The Macabre.

It’s a shame that this album runs just shy of 30 minutes because it’s a solid return, brimming with feral vocalisations and unruly thrashing. With opener ‘Where Evil Dwells’ the foursome show strains of dark melody beside what is essentially a Slaughter (the Canadian death-thrash outfit, not the US hard rock band!) style sound, but what really ups the ante here are the sinister segments of doom death.

A fine example of such sluggish grimness is exhibited on ‘Congregation Of The Exult’, but there are a few tracks which draw you into their morbid lair of stagnant chugging and in turn you get slimed by a few Autopsy-styled pukes too – just check out ‘Lusting Terror’.

The way Morbus Grave craft such passages of old school debauchery is masterful, each expression crusted with a layer of congealed pus. Interestingly though, ‘Funeral Embodiment’ reeks of sleazy Swedish D-beat filth, and there’s more putrid melody with ‘Dissolving Obscurity’. The framework here is familiar, but all ingredients work well together as the band grinds out foul mixes of death thrash n’ gloom.

I hope this release doesn’t get overlooked because Morbus Grave have constructed a fiery and fusty blend of vintage fury encased in a rank cocoon of deathly crud.
