It appears that the heaviest release of the year has waited until winter is upon us to announce its dismal presence. In reality, Trollcave should have been born within the dust of some abysmal Scandinavian crypt rather than the warmer climes of Barcelona in Spain.
With this two-track EP, the morbid mob cements its place as one of the most abysmal sounding manifestations to loiter in the rank caverns of death n’ doom. This time round the 32 minute duration is divided into two flabby segments, ‘Intro / Grotesque Abyssal Trespasser’ and ‘Abominator’s Diseased Carrion’, both of which dwell within a rank domain of ethereal fog and mould spores.
I know not what the EP or track titles mean, but they do conjure images of dank bottomless pits, grey jagged dripping walls and boundless, shadowy horrors whose moans and thuds echo through the walls of the mind. To sit within the clammy depths of ‘Grotesque Abyssal Trespasser’ is to become one with one’s own traumas and fears as primitive, sluggish thumps act as macabre, bottom-dwelling unnameables wallowing in their own silt.
Trollcave does test the patience rather, more so with the intro, but as the track unravels there’s little to offer outside of the miasmic ashen trudge, even when the band is at the pace to just above a crawl. Even so, it’s typically repulsive as is ‘Abominator’s Diseased Carrion’ with its remote clank and rainy ooze where the vocals are mere cavernous squalid echoes ringing round those haunted humid walls.
Trollcave loiters in despairing arcane avenues rich in gloomy formula where the only life is fungal. Sure, the EP does drag but that’s obviously the sole intention as you’re drawn into the musty air. Hypnotic horrors squirm with glee here as Trollcave concoct another harrowing episode of the eerie and the evil.
