Power Of Darkness (Blasphemous Rumours) is the new bewitching release from Chilean blackened speed maniacs Devil’s Poison, and as expected from this neck of the woods this is some authentic, explosive stuff from one of the most prolific acts on the scene.
Since 2016 these corpse-painted warriors have now released two full-length studio albums, but in-between and all around there’s been a host of split projects, demos and singles as well as a brace of EPs. However, let’s descend into the pitch black pot-hole that is this eight-track menace.
The band is a trio which plays occult-drenched, nasty thrash and I tend to take this stuff quite serious, even if the video for the title track is laughable. But look beyond the bullet belts and the smoke n’ spikes and you’ll be in for a thrilling blood-spilling ride to the dark side.
The likes of ‘Black Leather Gang’, ‘No Speed Limit For Rock And Roll’ and ‘Fuck Off And Die’ (sorry lads, but the titles just make me chuckle) nod towards first and second wave black metal aesthetics, with high doses of Venom, old Sodom, Kreator, Destruction, lashings of war metal, and the usual Norwegian style squabbling for good measure.
It’s all rollicking and racy, furiously punky, and thorny and ravenous with extra snap in the vocal department. ‘Night Street Rotten Demons’ is rougher than Satan’s scrotum, ‘Killers Of The Night’ opts for more oily traditional flavours as it simmers with suspense, and ‘Blasphemous Rumours‘ maintains the punky ethos.
The band knows its task is and rarely diverts from the left hand path, opting for organic vapours to be filtered through frosty black caverns. It is what it is – shadowy black thrash for those who still like to think about torching churches.
