Leading you into a maze of miserable sludge and dragging quicksand, the mighty Brazilian outfit The Evil announces its return with a bone-crushing sophomore outing that marries the majestic occultism of Coven and Candlemass.
Over the last few decades it’s fair to say that a lot of occult-driven doom metal has been spouted out boasting similar aesthetics, but with this seven-track outing there is such a sinister and bombastic air that’s impossible not to succumb to its creepy contours. What really sets this lumbering expression of darkness apart is the mercurial, commanding vocals of Mistres Wournous whose haunting wails and sullen tones drift through this pitch black labyrinth like some misty apparition.
There is a truly ominous flavour to this record; 43 minutes of tolling churchyard bells, rolling black riffs and percussion that slams into the cranium like a rusty axe. The Evil certainly don’t tread new avenues but when one feels the sodden trample of ‘Pride’, complete with its maniacal cackles, you can only drown in the silted majesty.
Opener ‘Envy’ wails and moans like a tortured soul entrapped within a dusty crypt, ‘Greed’ showcases those astonishing vocal techniques once again, and the rest of the seven deadly spins spiral like thick fog rising from a boggy marsh.
Seven Acts Of The Apocalypse envelopes the listener like a thick tapestry of esoteric images and ancient, occult text. The seeping menace of ‘Voracity, the expansive gloom of ‘Wrath’, it’s all here: classic evil doom metal best suited to resonating around cold castle corridors while stark branches from twisted trees tap on your window relentlessly. This is spooky!.
