Well, I never thought I’d hear the voice of English actor, broadcaster and comedian Stephen Fry sampled for a doom / stoner record, but maybe this Antwerp, Belgium-based group is unaware of just how gentle a soul Mr Fry is and that his dulcet tones just don’t suit such an opus.
Witch Piss is another rather standard troupe which focuses on the usual Black Sabbath-like riffs while at times leaning towards the more arduous, weed-soaked chimes, particularly with the trudging ‘How To Travel Lighter’. But as always is the case – for me anyway – my patience is often tested with albums of this nature. Does one literally have to ply themselves with hallucinogenics in order to escape the monotony?
Vocally, lead man Peter Egberghs has quite the distinctive gnarly tone that does, admittedly, set him apart from a glut of other stoner metal vocalists to the point that there is an element of grunginess to proceedings, but other than that this is familiar, middle of the road rolling from another band which simply cannot resist putting the word “witch” into its moniker! If I had to pick a favourite track on this debut full-length then it’d have to be the rumbling ‘Hoofprints’ or the slower, grinding ‘Children Of The Fire’.
