ACCU§ER
Rebirthless

MDD (2024)
Rating: 7.5/10

It’s always good to see these German thrash veterans marching through the decades. Rebirthless is the 13th full-length studio album of their career and remarkably, the band’s seventh since reforming in 2009. Accu§er still has a lot to give even if they remain a mid-table thrash act.

Rebirthless, the first to feature guitarist Sascha Stange, is still more of the same solid raucous thrash with enough catchy riffs to get you headbanging for days. The cover artwork is based on the painting ‘La rvolte des Enfers contre le Ciel (The revolt of the hell against the heaven)’ by Antoine Joseph Wiertz and it somewhat epitomises the fury within, particularly with the potent vocal delivery of guitarist Frank Thoms. Frank Kimpel’s bass provides a sturdy enough backbone to what is essentially a straight up assault, heightened by the drumming of Oliver Fechner.

There’s no filler here, just consistent bruising metal and standouts are many. My first few spins plucked ‘Painted Cruelty’ as a favourite and then my attention switched to ‘Fear Denied’ before I was eventually rinsed by ‘When Desperation Scorns’. However, as with a majority of Accu§er albums, consistency is key and weight is maintained alongside aggression.

Opening tirade ‘Violent Vanity’ is the band at their most brutish, expelling a tirade of smoking, speeding riffs to the volatile bursts from Thoms. ‘Ghost Of Disease’ boasts a Slayer vibe in its structure, but while there are a few nods to the rawness which made the band so captivating back in the 80s, Rebirthless is very much a modern thrash record. Unfortunately, even with all its obvious qualities (‘Spiritual Recipients’ is superb, as is the hyper thrash of ‘Faded Remorse’) I don’t see Rebirthless as an album I’ll return to a great deal, but that’s no reflection on Accu§er.

Still going strong, Accu§er can never be questioned when it comes to talent and commitment, but over the years the competition has been so fierce that my record collection somewhat swallowed them up, and the same may happen again. However, don’t let that detract from the fact that Rebirthless is another strong opus from this ever reliable force.
