BLIND OATH
Blind Oath

Horton (2023)
Rating: 8/10

Tulsa, Oklahoma-based metallers Blind Oath released a demo back in 2018 and since then seemed intent on releasing singles… until now. This self-titled debut full-length offering – which features all the singles released between 2020 and 2023 – comes as somewhat as a surprise. I thought, upon first inspection, it might have been another of those New Wave Of British Heavy Metal-worshipping bands, but I was very wrong.

Blind Oath’s debut most certainly offers up plenty of traditional metal details but with far more energy and weight, particularly in the deathly vocal rants of Eric Miller. To an extent it’s like hearing Cronos from Venom or Lemmy from Motörhead ranting over a slightly thrashy yet catchy as hell heavy metal record. The fact that these guys have shared the same stage as Exciter and Satan and have Cirith Ungol’s Tim Baker providing guest vocals on the track ‘The Flame’, pretty much says it all.

There is a decidedly 80s feel about proceedings with a contemporary shine, but never is the grit of the general sound sacrificed as the combo blazes through a selection of volatile tracks. ‘Ride Of Eleanor’, the devilish ‘Spectral Attack’, the monstrous ‘Tombs Of The Blind Oath’ and the shredding nature of ‘Fascinatrix’ are evidence of such thrilling diversity expressed within a feisty metal framework. To put it simply, this album rips… hard!.
