CARCASSE
Aborting Expectations

Self-released (2022)
Rating: 6/10

I don’t know much about this French act but while clearly influenced by the lights of UK veterans Carcass, this nine-track affair is a different beast even though its feet are firmly rooted in the death metal and death grind genre.

There are plenty of blast beasts on offer here and duelling vocals which are expressed as guttural bellows and yappy snaps. Of course, with titles such as ‘Maggot Glutted Lungs’ and ‘Putrid Vasectomy’ you are bound to get plenty of splattery extremity, but there’s a lot of melody on offer here too.

‘Heart Of The Swarm’ has a distinctive catchy chug propelled by the rotten guitar work and then we are hit with some truly hyper drums, but as this festering festival of the foul unravels it becomes quite accessible, and thankfully never leaks into the sillier realms of death grind.

The aforementioned ‘Maggot Glutted Lungs’ is one of the best tracks on the opus where again there’s that vocal mix and the hyper drums. I also love the vile chugging expressed on ‘Ascariasis In The Womb’.

This is gore-soaked death metal with some crazy percussion, rotten riffs and vocal schizophrenia. Yep, it’s fleeting and probably about as disposable as a severed limb, but there is a joy in such medical dramas.
