CURSE
Raise The Evil

Self-released (2023)
Rating: 7.5/10

A Colombian trio is responsible for this surprisingly melodic thrash debut full-length album. Curse were previously known as Tormentor and in spite of their rather bland monikers, members Josué Quintero (vocals and guitar) Jairo Rojas (bass) and Diego Leal (drums) pack quite the punch in their quest for infectious and blasphemous metal.

Although primitive streaks run through this ten track affair, much of what is on offer is delivered in a rather measured and steely fashion. Imagine if you will then a band channelling the first and second waves of infernal black metal but adding a rather concise, more accessible whip to their sound. This results in some seriously catchy melodramatics fused by clean yet stark riffs along with rawer bursts of Teutonic rust.

A number of cuts begin with or implement high levels of mid-tempo clanking, but for a majority of its time this release revels in that sordid blackened thrash dungeon where lyrics are spat with menace and rasping venom and the instrumentation rattles like an iron-clad warhorse on the gallop.

Sure, it is at times formulaic in its satanic rantings, but Raise The Evil is served up with such devilish enthusiasm and craft that one cannot help but spit a few flames in agreement with its black tidings and leathery wings.
