DETHEROUS
Unrelenting Malevolence

Redefining Darkness (2022)
Rating: 7.5/10

If ever there was a record that lived up to its title it’s this one, and this is some seriously noisy Canadian thrash with barked vocals and enough speed to rattle your cranium. Detherous is an acquired taste, more so due to the snappy vocal retorts, but Unrelenting Malevolence is a record that also boasts some excellent mid-paced chugging amidst the torrential hostility.

Detherous are not exactly new to the scene having formed out of Calgary, Alberta back in 2014, and this latest outing is the band’s second full-length and follow-up to 2019’s Hacked To Death debut.

If you like snappy, volatile thrash in the vein of Demolition Hammer and that sort of environment then this will appeal as the band bridges the gap between death and thrash. The album does feel a touch overlong and at times the tracks seem to melt into one big speedball, but if you’re having a bad day then this might be the sort of hit you want to go for.

‘Suspended In Agony’ has a Slayer meets Sadus vibe yet with extra menace, ‘Reek Of The Decayed’ is bolstered by its infectious percussion and ‘Erosion Of Reality’ just pounds hard and fast. It’s not a record of great variety and most tracks are delivered with such hateful hate that the slower tempos provide a welcome respite so as to prepare you for the next barrage.

Arguably one of the fastest records to blitz 2022, Unrelenting Malevolence is a rasping and abrasive thrash extravaganza for those who require such a lethal fix.
