Cryptic Lust is the debut full-length outing from Phoenix, Arizona-based death thrashers Eternal who’ve been in existence since 2021. With Cryptic Lust the song remains the same somewhat as the quartet chows down heavily on those old school influences, especially vintage Death. Vocalist and guitarist Emilio Ortega has a real growl to not only his voice but his axework which he shares with Sofie Nabboud.
As ‘Hammer Of Eternal Torment’ unravels we get treated to some atmospheric shifts that could easily slot in-between the grisly acts of Necrotum and Necrot, while the title track fizzes with wild leads and chomping riffage backed wholly by the meaty percussive slams of Xander Bridge.
For 45 minutes Eternal dishes out a juicy platter jam-packed with snarling gallops (‘Ancient Rites’), serrated strides (‘Thorns Of Regret’), steady gore-soaked pulses (‘Conjuring The Void’) and mid-tempo maddening (‘Spectral Immolation’). Thrills are few and far between but one doesn’t expect glitz and glamour, or even technicality from such mouldy aesthetics.
Cryptic Lust is a solid and fun old school death metal release delivered with enough stomp and bite to keep you entertained.
