EVILCULT
The Devil Is Always Looking For Souls

Awakening (2023)
Rating: 7/10

This Brazilian trio is obviously inspired by the extreme metal scene of days gone by; just look at the crude make-up that they sport alongside those dusty leather jackets, bullet belts and studded wristbands. Band members Lucas From Hell (vocals and guitar), Renato Lobo-Guará (bass), and Mateus Blasphemer (drums) channel plenty of malevolent forces through their brash sound on this second full-length release. In fact, it had me sifting through some of my old thrash albums due to the raw, nostalgic nature.

Musically there is a fire here that rages anywhere between the likes of Sarcófago, Venom, Running Wild, Exciter, Bulldozer and Onslaught. Basically then it is filthy speed metal marked by Satan himself as the outfit rages in hellish fashion through such summer joys as ‘Ancient Power’, ‘Call Of Evil’ and ‘The Witch’. But all seven tunes on offer here come drenched in a darkness that echoes around the living room and causes those candle flames to frantically flutter. The vocals are of a guttural, chesty rawness belted out in typically Brazilian fashion and everything else which stirs in such a damp chamber is dredged up from the silted bed of the river of Hades.

Don’t expect a great deal of variety but do expect to find layers of soot on the walls after such primitive orgasms are reached. Favourite track – the vile, trudging menace of ‘Die In Hell’.
