What better way to start off a New Year than with a splash of Goat Semen!! This Peruvian lot have been infecting minds and poisoning ears since 2000, but Ego Svm Satana is their debut full-length release. Previously, the quartet has carved a career out of embarking on several split projects and a handful of demos and, stranger still, two live recordings, so it’s about time they got down to the real business of putting a studio album to bed.
This debut offering is simply nine tracks of hellish metal dripping in blasphemy, which are delivered with as much subtlety as a spiked turd passing through your bowels and ripping your intestines out.
Goat Semen are fronted by one Erick Neyra, who spends the entirety of this album burping up more mouldy sickness than The Exorcist’s Reagan could ever handle. To enable his vile projections, guitarist Wa Han Beleth, bassist Necro (aka Jose Alfredo Lopez) and drummer Julio “Satyricon” Campos construct a blazing wall of fire channelled through their rancid instruments of displeasure.
So, what we get basically is a bludgeoning set of songs typically South American by design and daubed in blood, sweat, and Satanic symbolism. Add to the cauldron those rattling, billowing drums, that black smoking bass and a speeding guitar that would normally reduce and fretsters fingers to a gory pulp, and you have this long-awaited cacophony of utmost suffering. It’s as if Satan has bought a blender and thrown in the emotion of every minion who has once worshipped him; the final outcome being a sordid, squabbling, racket of unkempt deathly metal funnelled through Neyra’s demonic cackles, pukes and slimy grunts.
All of the tracks are fast, furious and scolded by Hell’s flames; my favourite of the insufferable bunch being the hammering ‘Warfare Noise’, which doesn’t really need any sort of introduction with a title like that. For those who want a description though I merely point you to the machine gun drumming, but more so the fantastic slower segments of brutality which are flecked with those old school Slayer-styled wailing solos and that overall impenetrable blanket of rust created by the din of the clanking drums and fizzing guitar belches.
Elsewhere, I enjoy the painful procession of ‘Madre Muerte’ which after numerous listens prompted me to go and purchase a belt made of bullets and a studded wrist-band drenched in pig’s blood, while the black thrashing menace of the title track was as equally influential in its apocalyptic cacophony that I then proceeded to drink the blood, remove the bullet-belt and impale my eyes upon their rusty points.
Goat Semen are old school underground Satanic metal whose sound shall slaughter the faint of heart, and fuel those strong enough to survive with the very fires of Hell’s domain. You knew what was coming; we always do with this sort of torturous metal, but when it finally hits like a hurricane full of nails, one can only shower in this orgy violence. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait another decade for the next experiment in aural sodomy.
