Born To Rot In Hell

Punishment 18 (2023)
Rating: 7.5/10

Forget the death metal-styled album title, this is some punk infused thrash from Italy. This is the fourth full-length release from the quartet and it’s a record bursting at the seams with fizzing leads, clanking riffs and a latter day Slayer hostility.

From the opening track ‘Tyrants Of Depravity’, vocalist Giacomo Burgassi adopts a Tom Araya-style of ranting, his voice coming across as a series of aggressive barks. And this is the theme throughout. Random picks such as ‘Cursed Blood’, ‘The Thing At The Edge Of Sanity’, ‘Fill Up The Grave!’ and ‘Nailed To The Crossfire’ are blunt thrash numbers delivered like a swift 1-2 combination, leaving you dazed from such a rapid flurry.

The album rarely deviates from such zip. ‘The Holy Grail’ sees the vocals drop a tone, ‘Born To Rot’ features impressive axework but is quick to veer back to type, although ‘Violence, Vengeance, Chaos’ offers a nice mid-tempo chug. Indeed, there are some decent melodic strikes within this volatile framework; you just have to siphon them out from the debris left by this blitzkrieg.
