ROTPIT
Let There Be Rot

War Anthem (2023)
Rating: 6.5/10

Just in case you weren’t weighed down enough by the current glut of murky death metal bands, here is another gore-soaked instalment. Let There Be Rot is the debut full-length outing from Rotpit who released a decent three-song demo, Into The Rotpit, in 2021.

With lyrics such as “Crawling primordial slime, out of the sewage with pestilental fumes” and “Abandoned in human waste, drenched with viral fluids”, and with track titles such as ‘Shitburner’, ‘Slimebreeder’ and ‘Night Of The Ultimate Rot’, this was never going to be the sort of release to give to your mum on Mother’s Day. Although not necessarily as sepulchral as I imagined it would be, Rotpit still manages to provide the perfect mix of slow, melodious and groovier dynamics (‘Slimebreeder’) and more uptempo grinding (‘Into The Rotpit’), but for the most part this is mid-tempo crushing that at times drifts towards a Swedish catchiness even with the vocal lashings of Ralf Hauber, although some will hear a mid-90s influence too.

Let There Be Rot runs at a tidy 34 minutes and offers up nine tracks. My favourites are probably the cavernous ‘Rottenness’ and the pacier ‘Deathtrip’, although there is a lack of identity with this style of death metal which results in this debut being catchy and entertaining but also a bit bland.
