SIEGE OF POWER
This Is Tomorrow

Metal Blade (2023)
Rating: 8.5/10

Straight from the Autopsy abattoir, grand vocal lunatic Chris Reifert wipes the blood off his apron and sharpens a new set of knives for the storming return of Siege Of Power. Alongside Reifert, guitarist Paul Baayens (Asphyx / Thanatos / Hail Of Bullets), bassist Theo van Eekelen (ex-Grand Supreme Blood Court / ex-Hail Of Bullets / ex-Houwitser) and drummer Bob Bagchus (ex-Asphyx / ex-Soulburn / ex-Grand Supreme Blood Court) assemble like leering ghouls, wielding their instruments as bloodied weapons to the soundtrack of their own maniacal laughter.

It’s been five years since 2018 debut Warning Blast was puked out and the combo wastes no time whatsoever in churning out a heap of nasty death / thrash dripping with a punk attitude. Slower segments will come and go, as evidenced on ‘Sinister Christians’, but Siege Of Power is mostly about murderous intensity as they act like rabid knife-wielding maniacs hacking and slashing their way through victims to the slurped commands of Reifert.

Opener ‘Force Fed Fear’ begins like Slayer and becomes so fast and furious to the point of spontaneous combustion for the listener, and this sickly theme of ravenous brutality continues as expected. However, every now and then the spectre of Autopsy haunts us with the slime-ridden lumbering chimes of ‘As The World Crumbles’ which offers a surprisingly melodic lead. Elsewhere, the deranged posse offers up the minimalist surge of ‘Oblivion’, while the title track opens like a sinister, simmering dirge before embarking on a hideous trudge.

This Is Tomorrow serves up an incredible atmosphere as Reifert barks and scowls like some unhinged cult leader dragging his worshippers to a certain death but at the expense of millions. ‘The Devil’s Grasp’, like other outbursts, is just a straight up punk frenzy that comes over as a gore-soaked Motörhead and just showcases the versatility of this bunch of grave robbers.

Like some seething horde of bloodthirsty corpses rampaging through the city, Siege Of Power takes 2023 by the ears, rips them off and drinks the blood that pours freely from the wounds. Savage.
