SPITFIRE
Trinity

Witches Brew (2024)
Rating: 6/10

German rockers Spitfire have a rather unsettled past so I’m surprised to see the Karlsruhe-based combo dishing up their third full-length platter since forming in 2016.

What also doesn’t help is that over the years there have been several bands with the same name, but here we are with Trinity, a tidy but unremarkable thrash assault that kicks off with the steady groove metal application of the title track. Decidedly modern in its approach, ‘Trinity’, as a song, is crisp but soulless, simply because of its generic thrash nature.

Hints of Nuclear Assault, Vio-lence and Death Angel can be found within the polished mix, but what’s obvious is that Spitfire just doesn’t boast anything beyond the bland. Yes, I’m being harsh, but there’s just so much of this stuff around that by the time I’m at the halfway stage with ‘Pointless Ways’ and ‘Creations Of God’, my attention has waned. And that’s a shame because there are some good riffs (‘Downfall Of Existence’) and bursts of aggression here.

‘Bending Reality’ literally scalps the listener as does the bassy ‘Mankind Into Dust’, but it’s archetypal thrash to its core and my patience runs thin all too quickly. Not quite on the frontline, Trinity is more of a background presence.
