TORTURE RACK
Primeval Onslaught

20 Buck Spin (2023)
Rating: 8.5/10

Returning for their third full-length outing, Portland, Oregon-based death metallers Torture Rack provide more of the same bulldozing belligerence which with every skewering solo tightens like razor wire round the throat.

This is some seriously catchy death metal that while structured as brutal shifts through the groove gears as opening cut ‘Ceremonial Flesh Feast’ chugs with menace and then strips off layers of skin with its pace. Like most quality acts, Torture Rack finds that perfect mix of thick, chunky melody and more maniacal segments led by squabbling leads and the bustling percussion of Seth Traver.

These themes continue with the bubbling riff of ‘Decrepit Funeral Home’, the gory rush of ‘Forced From The Pit’ and the lethal trio of tracks sandwiched in-between these and the tail end. The brief ‘Morning Star Massacre’, ‘Victims Of Inquisitors’ and ‘Bone Snare’ exhibit all that is good and ghoulish about the dense and catchy Torture Rack sound. The album culminates with four rampant gems in the form of snippet ‘Fucked By Death’, the old school grind of ‘Impalement Storm’, the blast beats of ‘Descent To Infernal Chasms’ and closer ‘Rotting Insignificance’ which serves up another sick groove.

With nary a track exceeding the four minute mark, Torture Rack’s latest slab of meat is served up simple and bloody and with every intention of choking you to death on its grisly, gristly chunks.
