TRAMALIZER
Fumes Of Funeral Pyres

Soulseller (2023)
Rating: 6/10

Here’s a Finnish four-piece that I’ve not previously heard of with their debut full-length album Fumes Of Funeral Pyres. Like a lot of their fellow countrymen Tramalizer dabble in the art of horror-obsessed death metal, although for me the vocals are extremely off-putting. Vocalist R. Tarvonen doesn’t adopt a grisly tone, instead his style is somewhat shouted and confrontational which just grates. But hey, you can’t always get what you want in life.

Musically, the band offers up a rather fast style of metal that boasts plenty of Swedish influence, especially on tracks like ‘Tramalized’ and ‘Hating God’. It’s fairly standard grinding death metal that would seem better suited to the mid-90s when bands such as Entombed were steering in a death n’ roll territory – no surprise then to discover that their 2022 single ‘Supposed To Rot’ was a tribute to L-G Petrov.

There is no denying with the aggression throughout this 11-track outing that the band is formidable beast; you get hints of punkiness and a constant flurry of riffs, but it all becomes too familiar. Songs like ‘Curse Of The Lake Drag’ and the title track all merge into one blizzard of belligerence.

My favourite track has to be ‘At The Night Of Feast’ with its classic Swedish groove machine in full motion, but this sort of savage expression has been spouted countless times before and while there is no questioning the intensity and energy there is a blandness to its muscularity.
