Looking like another of those long forgotten 80s gems is the self-titled debut EP from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based combo Breakker.
This is your standard yet entertaining bar room metal given a subtle edge by the vocals of Clare Mairéad who brings a haunting fragility alongside a punky, New Wave vibe as opener ‘Time’s Not Gonna Wait’ rattles in mid-tempo fashion.
There’s something raw and uncompromising about the rather British grit bestowed upon the listener. ‘Tight Leash’ has a Thin Lizzy or UFO vibe musically as the stark drums nod along with a no nonsense fluidity and the guitars are crisp yet raw.
The contrast between the placid yet effective vocal style and grittier musicianship makes for an enjoyable ride as the band cruises into the almost rock pop of ‘Under The Overlords’ and the keyboard sprinkled ‘Fever’. With closer ‘Lipstick Trace’ there’s a late 70s and early 80s feel as again that hard rock sound is understated in its approach.
I assume that the band name is a homage to German rockers Accept although there’s nothing here to match such metallic fury, but I’m all for the rather modest energy Breakker has crafted.
