IMPENDING TRIUMPH
Impending Triumph EP

Jawbreaker (2023)
Rating: 8/10

Epic, marching metal is what’s on the menu here as this Brussels, Belgium-based duo unleashes its debut work that comes fully armed with a dual vocal assault. This is good, steely and heroic metal dripping with commanding vocal echoes and mid-paced tempos that provide an apt soundtrack to the fantastic cover art.

‘Armies Of The Conqueror’, ‘The Invisible Fortress’, ‘Dragon Hunt’ and ‘Temple Of Oblivion’ all prompt the listener to reach for the role-playing games time and time again as swirling anthems fill the sky like smoke rising from the dragon-scorched battlefields. At times, and probably because of its European origins, there is a doomy feel about proceedings, more so on the trudging ‘The Invisible Fortress’ but the archaic vapours do remain throughout, even on the moments when the instruments gallop like golden stallions contending with grey waves.

This is well crafted and often majestic metal that is never far away from bombastic power metal trends, particularly on the expansive closer ‘Temple Of Oblivion’, but when one considers that the platter is only 25 minutes long, as a listener I felt so enriched and warmed by the depths of this wonderful adventure.
