MORGUE TERROR
Morgue Terror EP

Here is a new gruesome twosome which hails from Buffalo, New York. The splattery spidery logo and the cartoon horror track titles like ‘Broken, Beaten, Beheaded’ and ‘Chopped Up Chum’ suggested to me a rather slammy vibe, but what you get is a horror-obsessed (particularly with the Terrifier movies) groovy death metal that slips between contemporary and old school. There are plenty of hefty riffs then from guitarist Dave Jurenovich, who is joined by Steve Lipka who brings the grunts and the bass.
This is mostly speedy stuff with a strong snare and occasional sinister dips, but just like fellow Buffalo natives Cannibal Corpse the sound of Morgue Terror is somewhat goofy in its catchiness, although it still makes for a rather infectious listen through the five cuts on offer. The percussion is a bit of a mess mix wise and sometimes the guitar seems to suffer, but it remains reasonably savage, particularly on ‘Morbid Curiosities’ with its thrashy edge and ‘Nightstalker’ with its old school rawness.
Obviously, work needs to be done here, but for a short blast of bloodied brutality Morgue Terror’s noise provides a quick fleshy feast of a fix.
