Pendulvm is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist D. Anhedonist, a Chilean native who is sure to make waves with this debut EP featuring four tracks of death n’ doom. A couple of months prior to this EP a two-song demo was released and both of those songs – ‘Llanos de Tumbas’ and ‘Old And Doomed’ – feature here alongside the equally nasty ‘Lento Descenso al Desprecio’ and ‘Caballero Errante’.
What you get here are massive doomy riffs coated in black silt. Often such lumbering masses quicken, successfully bridging the gap between doom and death metal to result in pitch darkness that is punctured by the hideous gasps circa Darkthrone’s 1991 classic debut album Soulside Journey.
The way the title tune shifts between murky doom and fetid ambling is a joy, but then again I expect no less from the festering bowels of Chile, a country that has and continues to provide quality extreme metal. ‘Old And Doomed’ is downright terrifying in its vile, grinding approach as our mysterious creator bellows from beyond like some possessed demon.
Archaic and underground in every aspect, this despicable EP rumbles and resonates from the coldest crypts, the murkiest catacombs and the most pungent vacant eye sockets of the dead. Much of this is draped in a morbid lethargy as ‘Old And Doomed’ leaks into the squirming compost of ‘Lento Descenso al Desprecio’, another traipsing ooze of horror and dread. You know what’s coming but you can’t escape the slithering gelatinous gunk. The guitars drag through the darkness, although not in the funereal doom sense, but in an organic sense of abysmal churning.
Final cut ‘Caballero Errante’ just continues the dismal seeping, as if one gargantuan beast has finally shed its stinking orifice of not only excrement but its gut lining. Heavy, hellish and heinous, Pendulvm has arrived.
