PHOSPHOROUS
Fossilized Remains EP

Self-released (2024)
Rating: 7/10

Aah, the sweet n’ sickly stench of death metal consumes us once again, this time from Phosphorous, who, as their name suggests are not here to feed us tales of love and light. With its primitive cover art, Fossilized Remains boasts that sepulchral air, a thick waft of humid putridity straight from the filthy sewers of Finland.

Five tracks blast your face like warm, sickly winds puked from some infernal domain and the flurries are so aggressive that one can detect a blackened war metal presence within the heated mire. Nothing new really but billowing and choking all the same and a continuation from 2023’s Primitive Executions demo. A brace of tracks from the demo feature here, ‘Walls That Breathe’ and ‘Bathing In Bacteria’, both of which are furious gusts of thick, toxic vapours that are both eerily remote in their pitch black guise.

With this sort of all encompassing death metal one struggles not to be swept up by the chaotic whirlwind of grinding riffs and heated walls of percussion. It all adds up to a tumultuous and suffocating blanket of war-torn extremity and feral bashing as exhibited on the blast furnace of opening track ‘Mass Graves Of Fossilized Remains’ and the hammering pistons of hate on closer ‘Melting In Amber’. The headache will last long after the smoke has cleared from this abhorrent machine.
