Considering the quality of the Finnish death metal scene this four-song debut EP from Helsinki’s Slaughterror – consisting of Okko Solanterä (vocals), Saku Moilanen (guitar) and Juuso Turkki (bass) – is rather bog standard. Endless Lust For Gore has a strong late 1990s / early 2000s feel and is bereft of atmosphere and reminds me of the sort of gnashing extremity that Rogga Johansson would churn out.
Opening track ‘Incarnation’ is crisp in its savagery and groove-ridden, but it also feels cold and soulless in its blasts. There is no denying the aggression, but by the time ‘Victim’ and then the title track hits I’m somewhat underwhelmed.
The EP seems to take inspiration from the US death metal scene too and the generic grinds of Six Feet Under. I dunno, it’s just not my thing, especially with the modern twists, and I really do anticipate this outing getting swallowed up within the glut of similarly designed bands. Sure, be as aggressive as you want, but it’s going to take more than that for Slaughterror to stand out from the crowd.
