Finnish hardcore punk group Dropzone issue debut full-length studio album Rape Killing Murder on December 29th, 2017 through Osmose Productions.
One morning in the summer of 1996, Björn was sitting at the restaurant Roskapankki in Kallio, Helsinki with Jukka Suksi, guitarist of The Flaming Sideburns. A hard night’s drinking had been enjoyed in Kallio with other members from The Flaming Sideburns as well as members of Thee Ultra Bimboos.
Björn had played a show the night before with Gandalf at the Tavastia Club for a Finnish beverages company named Koff. After Tavastia, run into members of Gandalf at a now-defunct dive bar named Rock Café Maestro. They would end up in an apartment in Kallio Rock City.
While at Roskapankki, Björn got a sudden urge to play some D-beat hardcore punk rock. Resultantly, he called all MD-Studio in Munkkiniemi to reserve time in the coming weeks to record material with producer Hiili Hiilesmaa.
Needing members to round a group, Björn called the following musicians; Mika “Gas Lipstick” Karppinen (now formerly of Gandalf, HIM, Kyyria, among others, and currently of Hallatar and Valvontakomissio), Jari Hurskainen (formerly of Gandalf and currently of The Scourger), and Paul “Pale” Kyyrö (currently of Divine:Decay and Hybrid Children).
The name Dropzone was adopted from a 1994 action movie starring Wesley Snipes. Following one to two rehearsals where tracks were written, Dropzone entered MD-Studio in the late summer or early autumn of 1996, aiming to cut eight tracks in eight hours. Being late, only five-and-a-half hours were used. Work was postponed to the following week.
Resultant effort Rape Killing Murder were recorded live on tape, except for the lead guitars and vocal overdubs. Some copies of the recording were sent out to various magazines in late 1996, although nothing much else happened aside from a TV recording of the song ‘Enslaved Forever’ on the TV show Jyrki (shown on the MTV3 channel in Finland) as well as a gig at the now-defunct night club Teatro later on in the evening.
Years later, Paul “Pale” Kyyrö sent Osmose Productions label founder Hervé Herbaut a link to Dropzone’s SoundCloud page, Divine:Decay having been signed to the label in the past. Several days later, Herbaut offered to release Rape Killing Murder.
