New Orleans, Louisiana-based metal group Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, led by the current Down / Superjoint and former Pantera frontman, have filmed a music video for the track ‘Choosing Mental Illness’, which can be viewed below. Directed by Katherine Richardson-Anselmo with director of photography Mike Holderbeast and starring Michael St. Michaels (The Greasy Strangler), the six-plus-minute clip pays tribute to Milos Forman’s 1975 drama, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.
Anselmo commented: “This video is based on one of my favourite films about the harshness of mental illness. Being up close and personal with the struggle, I often feel like R.P. McMurphy, who I play in the clip.
“I’ve had a lot of questions about the LP title, Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue and song title, ‘Choosing Mental Illness’, but make no mistake, I take mental illness very seriously, especially because it often goes untreated. We’ve taken some extra steps at the end of the video with information that you, or someone close to you might need.
“On a lighter note, it’s always a blast to do creative things like the video with my band, crew, and family. Bringing Michael St. Michaels into the fold was like having your favourite wacky uncle over for the holidays! He did a great job as our version of Nurse Ratched and he’s an absolutely lovable and talented guy… go see The Greasy Strangler!”
Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals issued second full-length studio album Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue on January 26th, 2018 in North America through the singer’s own Housecore Records. European release took place on the same day via a licensing agreement with Season Of Mist.
The singer added: “Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue, is going to get hated. It’s going to get loved. Like every record, I’ve ever done, I put zero expectations upon my peers, critics, or the general fucking public. If you take one thing away from it, let it be this: Do not bog yourself down to one brand, character, or whatever. Have the guts to spread your wings and fucking flourish. I can promise you this is a beginning. As my music trickles out over the next two years, it’s going to be quite the roller coaster ride. This new Illegals is just the tip of the whole fucking avalanche.”
The outing has been made available for streaming in its entirety via YouTube and can be accessed below.
