Dane, who had a history of addictions and health issues, was in São Paulo, Brazil recording his second solo album Shadow Work.
Sanctuary guitarist Lenny Rutledge posted the following message on the band’s Facebook page: “Today I wake up to the news that Warrel Dane has died. I don’t even know what to say. My friend, brother and musical companion for over 30 years has passed away. I’m in total shock right now. I’m sorry for any close family or friends that had to hear the news on Facebook.”
Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine, who produced Sanctuary’s 1988 debut album Refuge Denied, commented: “So incredibly sad to hear that Warrel has passed. I recorded his first album with him, we were family. He was important to so many people and so many loved him. His legacy lives on with his songs and his voice.”
A memorial for Warrel Dane was held at Studio Seven in Seattle, Washington on January 7th, 2018.
