New Jersey-based sludge / noise band Sunrot have released an official music video for the track ‘Trepanation’, which can be viewed below.
“‘Trepanation’ is an older song that came together quickly and compulsively and the lyrics kind of reflect that burning anxious need to get it out and get it out quickly,” Sunrot commented.
“‘Trepanation’ is an old medical procedure where they would drill a hole into a persons skull to relieve pressure in the head. As a group of people we have all dealt with varying degrees of mental health struggles and the song is using that procedure as a metaphor for the release of that kind of mental pressure. That frantic need for release. It’s definitely one of the more personal songs on the record and we hope it can help someone feel seen who is also in the middle of a crisis. Hope y’all enjoy it. Rot in the sun.”
Sunrot issue second full-length studio album The Unfailing Rope on April 7th, 2023 through Prosthetic Records.
“The Unfailing Rope is a document of grief and hope to reflect our current moment,” bassist Ross Bradley commented. “This record was created while we firsthand experienced our city come to a reckoning with its people. Our planet being irreparably eroded, our communities being killed. But also a time where more people than ever are ready to fight back. A time where the most pain has also birthed the most righteous anger and action. The Unfailing Rope is the mantra of light and the path to death.”
The Unfailing Rope was recorded three times, the third and final recording being captured by Scot Moriarty at Backroom Studios in Rockaway, New Jersey, and later mastered by Magnus Lindberg of Cult Of Luna. Vocalist Lex Santiago was hospitalised between the first and second recordings, suffering from a psychotic episode.
A voice sample on the track ‘Love’ is taken from a speech by James Baldwin. Also, additional vocals and lyrics on the song ‘Gutter’ were provided by Bryan Funck (Thou) and Emily McWilliams (Silver Godling), while additional vocals on the song ‘Trepanation’ were lent by Scot Moriarty. Additional noise on ‘Patricide’ was contributed by Blake Harrison (Pig Destroyer).

A music video was filmed for the track ‘Gutter’. “‘Gutter’ is, likewise, a track full of grief and hope,” Ross Bradley said. “Ecological genocide, like the proposed ‘cop city’ destroying Atlanta forests, is more and more commonplace. The insatiable maw of colonialism and capitalism is driven toward ending life on earth for profit and will not stop unless we stop it. We believe that the land belongs to its indigenous keepers and must be ceded back to their stewardship. ‘Gutter’ is a plea for action and an expression of hope that a better world is possible, and maybe not even just possible, but inevitable, if that’s what we choose.”
In addition, an official visualiser video was released for the song ‘Patricide’. “‘Patricide’ is a song about taking back control from those people and forces that try to exert control over you,” Sunrot said. “It’s a song about empowerment, surviving, healing and breaking those cycles of abuse that so many of us have been put through. Even though this track is imbued with a venom and anger, we want people who have experienced these traumas to feel seen. We want this to be an invitation to choose yourself and choose healing, as difficult as that process can be.
“A few of us have backgrounds working in community care of different varieties and so much of what we need to heal as a people is horror we have individually experienced at home either currently or as kids. Folks engaging with that trauma and clawing their way to the other side is one of the most important and powerful things a person can do.”

Debut studio record Sunnata was independently released in August 2017.
